The NBA Trade Deadline is on February 10th, 2022 and I expected many transactions to occur especially trade. Well another transaction occurred with a trade involving Montrezl Harrell between the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets.
Washington Wizards acquire: PG Ish Smith, PF/C Vernon Carey Jr., 2023 Second round pick (Celtics)
Charlotte Hornets acquire: C/PF Montrezl Harrell
Washington Wizards Side:
The Wizards season is pretty much over ever since Bradley Beal suffered his injury. So the Wizards are going to get rid of players that don’t fit the future. Montrezl Harrell is one of these players as his contract is ending at the end of the season so why not trade him for something then loose him for nothing. Vernon Carey could be something for the future if developed properly but Ish Smith is not the future and he’s terrible. On a side note how many times has Ish Smith been traded in his career? I counted 6 times which is crazy. At least they get a draft pick from this trade as well.
Charlotte Hornets Side:
The Charlotte Hornets clearly needed to get a center in the trade deadline. Especially as the only one that they truly had was Mason Plumlee. In order to ensure that they make the playoffs or the Play in Tournament they needed to make a move. So GM Mitch Kupchak made a move to acquire Montrezl Harrell and I was nervous that they gave too much up. But they really did not give much up at all by trading Ish Smith and Vernon Carey Jr who did not have much of an impact for the Hornets. The Hornets added some experience, energy, and offense to this team which is huge. The only issue is that Montrezl Harrell is not the best on defense but is a lot better than what they already had.
Grades for Montrezl Harrell Trade
Washington Wizards: B+
Charlotte Hornets: A
Now I maybe a little bias in grading this trade as the Charlotte Hornets are my favorite basketball team but there is no question that they won this trade. They did not give up much and they got much needed help at center. For the Wizards this season pretty much ended the moment Bradley Beal went down with an injury and Harrell was probably were not going to bring him back so they thought why not get some value for him. Great deal for both the Charlotte Hornets and the Washington Wizards.
