Om March 16th, 2022 history was made as the Seattle Kraken for the first time in franchise history made a trade receiving multiple draft picks instead of one. In this deal the Seattle Kraken and the Calgary Flames have agree to a trade involving Calle Jarnkrok.

Seattle Kraken Acquire: A 2022 Second Round Pick (via Florida), 2023 3rd Round Pick, and 2024 7th Round Pick
Calgary Flames Acquire: F Calle Jarnkrok

Seattle Kraken Side

Many will disagree with me here but this is a trade that should have been made months ago during the Expansion Draft. The Kraken should have traded Jarnkrok to help build their franchise to the future. But luckily Jarnkrok did not decline and has been solid this season. He only has one year left in his contract and there is a possibility he would not have resigned with the team. So why not get something for him now then loose him for nothing in a few months. Now the Kraken will be retaining 50% of Jarnkrok’s salary so the Kraken will be saving 1 million dollars, but what matter more here for the Kraken is the growing their draft capital.

Calgary Flames Side

This trade and the Tyler Toffoli trade confirmed one thing regarding the Calgary Flames. They are going all in this season in order for the team to win the Stanley Cup. The Flames needed to bolster the team in reinforcing the teams depth. Jarnkrok is very versatile as he shines on defense, the penalty kill, and power play. he is not the best on offense but he is a solid shooter. It is a bit of an overpayment by Calgary giving three picks away on a gamble but I can’t complain on the fact that they did spread the years of draft picks given up.

Jarnkrok will fit well in the locker room for the Flames as Calle Jarnkrok is the cousin of Flames star Elias Lindholm and great friends with Jacob Markstrom. Both are leaders in the Flames locker room and on the ice. In fact they are so close together that I found some very interesting tweets regarding there relationship and all I have to say is that he is going to fit like a glove in this lockeroom.

Just look at this 8 and a half minute video and you can tell the excitement both Jacob Markstrom and Elias Lindholm have when they talked to the media about the trade.

Jarnkrok also doesn’t count a lot via the salary cap as since the Kraken are retaining 50% of his salary he will only be a 1 million dollar cap hit for this season. Which is a plus but he will be a free agent in the upcoming offseason so the risk is there for the Flames as he could be gone next season.

The Stats in Question

Grades for Calle Jarnkrok Trade
Seattle Kraken: B+
Calgary Flames: B+

A win-win deal for both teams. I have to give both teams the same grade. The Seattle Kraken gets draft capital and cap space to help with their building of the tea. Calgary gets another piece on their team to help them for the playoffs in their push to compete for a Stanley Cup. Overall Good move by Seattle Kraken GM Ron Francis and Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving.
