The NBA Trade Deadline is on February 10th, 2022 and I expected many transactions to occur especially trade. One player that was traded in mid January is Juancho Hernangomez. Well once again he is on the move as he is included in a three team deal that involves the Utah Jazz, San Antonio Spurs, and Portland Trail Blazers. The details of the trade are shown down below.

San Antonio Spurs Aquire: PG/SG Tomas Satoransky, and a 2027 second round pick (Utah)
Portland Trail Blazers Aquire: SF/SG Joe Ingles, SF Elijah Hughes, and a 2022 Second round pick (Memphis)
Utah Jazz Aquire: SG Nickeil Alexander-Walker and PF/SF Juancho Hernangomez

San Antonio Spurs Side

The San Antonio Spurs are clearly rebuilding and are in the process of determining who belongs and who doesn’t in the long term. The Spurs realized that Juancho Hernangomez was not going to be one of these players and so they traded him. So the Spurs basically got a bad contract that is expiring next season and a second-round pick for a player who the Spurs barley used. Not a bad deal for a team rebuilding and trading for draft picks.

Portland Trail Blazers Side

Trades like this one confuse me as I have no idea what the Portland Trail Blazers are even doing with this move. I don’t understand why thy are trading Alexander-Walker as he could have been a great player for the team in the long term. But acquiring Joe Ingles is a confusing one as his contract expires at the end of the season plus he wont play this year as he suffered a Torn ACL. Elijah Hughes could be something but he wasn’t that good with the Utah Jazz and was kind of a scrub for them. I mean at least they get a second round draft pick as a result of this trade so there is that.

Utah Jazz Side

This is a solid deal for the Utah Jazz as they needed to get a consistent rotational players. Henangomez and Alexander-Walker can be these players. This is also the replacement for Joe Ingles who got hurt and was a part of this trade. Alexander-Walker is 23 years old and is a player of the future for the Utah Jazz. The best part of the Utah Jazz making this move saves them 11 million dollars in the luxury tax.

Grades for Juancho Hernangomez Trade

San Antonio Spurs: C+
Portland Trail Blazers: D
Utah Jazz: B+

The Utah Jazz win this trade as they get salary relief and rotational players on their team. Plus Alexander-Walker is a player of the future as he is young and will potentially get better with time. Like I said earlier this trade makes me question what the Portland Trail Blazers are doing and the Spurs are in a rebuild right now. They realized that Hernangomez was not going to be with them long term so why not get resources to help their rebuild.
