A lot of transactions were made during the NHL Trade Deadline. Some teams want get value for players who most likely won’t resign and others want to get players to help build the future of their team. In this trade it is between both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets.
Arizona Coyotes Acquire: F Jack McBain
Minnesota Wild Acquire: 2022 2nd Round Pick (via Vancouver)
Arizona Coyotes Side
This is a really great trade made by the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes are a young rebuilding team and have a ton of draft capital. In fact the Coyotes have a total of five 2nd round picks in the 2022 NHL Draft and not all of them had to be utilized in that draft. Picks can be utilized towards trades as well and Arizona did it with this move by acquiring McBain. He was not going to sign with the Wild so he was available on the market and Arizona wanted him on their team to help with their rebuild. From what I had seen from him in the 2022 Winter Olympics and in Boston College NCAA games he has a lot of potential. The best part is that they traded their latest 2nd round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft as it was the Vancouver Canucks pick.
Minnesota Wild Side
This was a move the Minnesota Wild had to make during the trade deadline. Especially as McBain voiced that he was not going to sign with the organization. McBain was set to be a free agent in Mid-August and the trade deadline was the Wild’s last chance to get some value for McBain. It was looking like the Wild were going to have to trade him for pennies on the dollar. Luckily for the Wild, Arizona came in and gave an offer that they could not refuse. Yes it sucks that a young promising 22 year old prospect had to be traded, but they got nice value for a player who has not played a game yet for the team.
Grades for Jack McBain Trade
Arizona Coyotes: A
Minnesota Wild: A-
This is a win-win trade for both teams. I contemplated giving both teams the same grade but I’m leaning towards giving leverage to the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes get a young prospect that will be a part of their future and did not have to sacrifice a lot of their draft pick collection to acquire Jack McBain. The Wild they don’t loose in this deal either as they get a draft pick for a player that was not going to resign with him. It just sucks that the Wild are going to loose a young prospect like McBain. Great move by Wild GM Bill Guerin and Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong.
