With the 2022 NFL Draft officially concluded, teams are making last minute moves before OTA’s and Mandatory Minicamp begins. Also there are other teams that are getting value for players they don’t see as a part of their team in the long term. This is one of these deals involving the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs who have agreed on a trade involving CB/S Lonnie Johnson. The details of the trade are down below.

Houston Texans Side
Ah there is the Texans we know and love. Trading a solid secondary player in Lonnie Johnson for next to nothing in return except a conditional late round pick. Like serious, what are they doing? Yes he was not the most consistent in coverage, but he was one of the lone bright spots on a terrible Texans secondary. Why are they giving up on him now as he could be a solid piece on a Texans defense? I am guessing that the Texans were going to cut him and wanted to get something for him. This is another perplexing move made by this organization who could have gotten more value out of him. The most perplexing thing about this team, is that they are keeping Jack Easterby as a part of their organization for some reason.
Kansas City Chiefs Side
This is simple to analyze on the Chiefs side. The Chiefs during the draft had a goal to build up this defense. They accomplished that goal and now it was time to get depth pieces at the secondary as Tyrann Mathieu is not coming back for the Chiefs next season. So why not take a shot at a bright spot on a terrible Texans secondary. The Chiefs did not give up a lot of value for Johnson so if he flops then the Chiefs don’t loose much at all.

The Chiefs easily win this trade. They take a chance on Lonnie Johnson and don’t sacrifice much draft capital in order to acquire him. The Texans gave up on him way too early, but at least they got something for a guy they were likley gong to cut during final cut day. Great move by Chiefs GM Brett Veach.
