The NBA Trade Deadline was on February 10th, 2022 and I expected many transactions to occur especially trade. Well another transaction occurred with a trade involving Dennis Schroder between the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets.
Boston Celtics Acquire: PF Daniel Theis
Houston Rockets Acquire: PG Dennis Schroder, C Enes Freedom, and PF/C Bruno Fernando
Boston Celtics Side
The Boston Celtics as they needed to get a solid player on their rotation for both Al Horford and Robert Williams. Daniel Theis can absolutely be that player as he plays great on defense and is does an excellent job sets up screens on offense. This move also helps the Rockets open up roster spots to bring players in especially when players start getting bought out of their deals. Celtics trading both Enes Freedom and Dennis Schroder helps them as well shed salary as well. I am surprised that the Celtics did not have to trade a draft pick in order for this deal to happen which is a big benefit.
Houston Rockets Side
I don’t understand what the Houston Rockets are doing. They basically traded Daniel Theis for pennies on the dollar. Especially as both Enes Freedom and Dennis Schroder may not even play a single game for the Rockets. The Rockets are planning to waive Enes Freedom and it looks like the Rockets will be buying out Dennis Schroder. Even if Schroder isn’t bought out I doubt he is here for the long term. The only player I could see as potential benefit is Bruno Fernando and I don’t think he will be much excluding depth as a rotational piece. Plus Fernando’s contract expires at the end of the season as well. At least they don’t have to deal with Daniel Theis contract.
Grades for the Dennis Schroder Trade
Boston Celtics: A
Houston Rockets: D-
Out of all the Trades I have graded this is the easiest one the Boston Celtics win this trade no question. This move was mainly a salary dump for the Rockets and the Celtics get more roster spots, a rotational piece on this team, save salary, and did not have to sacrifice any draft capital. Good move by the Boston Celtics here.
