There were a ton of trades that were announced during the trade deadline. Sometimes trades are done for teams to fill holes on the roster while their original players are recovering from injuries. This is one of those trades as the Dallas Stars decided to make a deal with the Arizona Coyotes on a trade involving goalie Scott Wedgewood.
Arizona Coyotes Acquire: A conditional 2023 4th Round Pick
Dallas Stars Acquire: G Scott Wedgewood
Now the pick the Arizona Coyotes can become a 3rd round pick but only if the Dallas Stars make the playoffs this season.
Arizona Coyotes Side
Not going long here as it is pretty easy to analyze this trade on Arizona’s side. Arizona is rebuilding and is trying to stockpile as many picks as they can to help with their rebuild. Wedgewood is in the final year of his contract and it is likely the Coyotes were not going to resign him anyways. So why not clear cap spaces (Even though it is 800,000 dollars) and get a mid-round pick for a journeyman backup goalie.
Dallas Stars Side
The Dallas Stars needed to get a goaltender at the trade deadline. Especially with all the injuries that are happening with the Stars Goalies. Anton Khudobin is going to be out for the season with a hip injury and Ben Bishop retired due to a serious knee injury. Now add Brandon Holtby as he is going to be out due to a lower-body injury for a bit (The NHL needs to change the way they identify injuries as it is too vague.) If the Stars overwork Jake Oettinger then the risk of injury and burnout will be growing. The stars need Oettinger healthy if they make the playoffs. So why not trade for a goalie who can be serviceable until Holtby heals up from his injuries.
The Stats in Question

Grades for Troy Scott Wedgewood Trade
Arizona Coyotes: B+
Dallas Stars: B+
A win-win trade for both teams. I will give both teams the same grade here. The Stars get depth at goalie until Holtby is all healed up from his injuries. The Coyotes add an extra draft pick for their rebuild, get an extra roster spot, and clear cap space. Great move by Arizona Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong and Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill.
