The NHL Trade Deadline is a time where teams will make multiple deals with each other many times. Well one of those deals happened as another deal has been struck between the Arizona Coyotes and the Toronto Maple Leafs involving G Carter Hutton.
Arizona Coyotes Acquire: Future Considerations
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: G Carter Hutton
Arizona Coyotes Side
Arizona is tanking the year and trying to trade players that are not the future for some value. Carter Hutton is not that future for the Coyotes. I wanted to wait on grading this trade when it originally came out as the Arizona Coyotes only got Future Considerations in this deal and that could be anything. It could be cash or draft capital or a pick swap but it has never been fully confirmed. But at least they got something for a guy they were going to be placing on waivers soon.
Toronto Maple Leafs Side
I don’t understand what the Maple Leafs are doing here with this trade. First let’s get this out of the way why are you trading for a player that is going to be a free agent. He was just waived by the Arizona Coyotes and you can easily sign him to another contract. There was no need to acquire him in a trade and give up resources. Second Carter Hutton has AHL written all over him. Especially with the three games that he has played this year in the majors all I got to say is Yikes. Not only with allowing 15 goals to be scored in 3 games (an average of 5 per game) But look at the Stats in Question down below.

Yeah not good at all. Hutton analytically is not good either. Plus Hutton is 35 years old and with the trade you made earlier in the deadline acquiring Ryan Dzingel and Ilya Lyubushkin this is one of your last chances to win a Stanley Cup. Hutton is not going to help with the main goal winning a Stanley Cup. This was a move probably made to get depth at goaltender.
Grades for Carter Hutton Trade
Arizona Coyotes: N/A
Toronto Maple Leafs: D
I wish I could grade the Coyotes as the winner but we still don’t know the specific “Future Compensation” that the Coyotes will be getting with this deal. So i decided to put N/A until it comes out what the compensation is. I can’t give this a good grade for the Maple Leafs as Carter Hutton was not good at all with the Coyotes.
