It is getting crunch time for teams to make trades during the deadline. I expect many trades to be revealed in the next few hours that will intrigue many. This trade was technically done yesterday but it is an intriguing to analyze. It is involving the Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild in a deal for F Nicolas Deslauriers.

Anaheim Ducks Acquire: 2023 3rd Round Pick
Minnesota Wild Acquire: F Nicolas Deslauriers

Anaheim Ducks Side

This was not a hard one to analyze on the Ducks side. The writing was on the wall for the Anaheim Ducks. They had to sell during the deadline as it was clear they were not winning with this core and should continue to help with their rebuild. Nicolas Deslauriers was not going to be a part of the future as his contract expires at the end of the season and he is 31 years old.

Minnesota Wild Side

The Wild are clearly going to be buyers this season. Especially as Parise and Suter’s buyouts start getting paid next season which will take a chunk out of their salary cap. But this move is understandable yet bit perplexing in a way. The Wild want to get as much depth as they can in their playoff push and get another big body on their 3rd and 4th line. But the Wild have plenty of gritty players and big bodies like specially Joel Eriksson EK, Jordan Greenway, Nick Foligno, and etc. I also believe that the Wild overpaid for Deslauriers and there is a huge risk in that acquiring him would only be for a rental as his contract expires next season. It will be interesting how the Wild be using him in upcoming games.

The Stats In Question

Grades for Nicolas Deslauriers Trade
Anaheim Ducks : A
Minnesota Wild: B-

I have to give the Anaheim Ducks the win in this trade. Especially as it was clear the Ducks were not going to resign Deslauriers to another contract and why not get some value then loose him for next to nothing. The Minnesota Wild kind of overpaid for Deslauriers, but I get why they did it to bolster the team for the playoffs and to add grit to the team. But I would have paid a 5th maybe 6th round pick for Deslauriers services. Overall solid deal by both Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek and Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin.
