Kentucky Women Pull Off Upset of the Year!

Women’s basketball is not a subject that I often write about or follow, but this game, this one singular game, is one that will go down as one of the best basketball games of the year. Not just women’s or college, but one of the best of the year. South Carolina was the number one seeded and also ranked first overall in NCAAW. UK was 19-11 but riding a 9 game win streak. No one believed that the Cats would win, until they did.

The first quarter was close, and also high scoring for a women’s game, 21-18 South Carolina. SC immediately shut the Cats down in the 2nd, only allowing 3 points. The Cats defense stayed strong though, only allowing 9. At the half, SC 30 UK 21.

The 3rd quarter was an almost exact repeat of the 1st, the Cats put up 22 but SC added 25 to their total, bringing the score to UK 43 SC 55.

Then came the 4th. The magical 4th quarter that UK made this magic happen. The Cats outscored the Gamecocks by 14 to win by two, holding SC to only 7 points. The Cats hero, Dre’Una Edwards, made this happen in the 4th to win:

UK’s stars of the game were of course Dre’Una Edwards (27 pts, 9 reb) and Wooden Award Finalist Rhyne Howard (18 pts, 2 ast, 4 reb). SC’s stars were Aliyah Boston (21 pts, 11 reb) and Zia Cooke (15 pts, 2 ast, 5 reb).

Where will the selection committee rank the Cats now? They seem to be the team to beat after beating the two loss Gamecocks. I think their ceiling is a 3 seed and the floor is a 7. What are your thoughts? Drop a comment and join the conversation!
